the big 0-2

February 22, 2012

A week ago today my nephew turned 2 years old. So crazy! It’s even hard to believe that he’s now 2 years and 1 week old! This past weekend we headed to Toledo for his awesome birthday bash. The party was Yo Gabba Gabba themed (after his favorite show). My sister worked pretty hard to make an awesome Brobee Cake for the event. It was definitely a success!!

Don’t know who Brobee is? Welp, that’s exactly what he looks like. I got the plate in the picture for reference.

Here’s a blurry phone picture of the before, so you can see how she made the shape. All cut free hand!

Mason even had a Yo Gabba Gabba shirt custom embroidered by his Grandma, of course.

Opening presents is hard work! He needed a drink break amidst the craziness.

Happy Birthday, Mason!

Button Scarf (pattern)

February 21, 2012

purple knit scarf

I made this scarf a while ago, but then I wasn’t sure if I liked the fabric button…

…I’ve decided I do, and it’s blog worthy.

Like all the scarf patterns I’ve put on here, this one is also very simple. It is just a rectangle that is folded over and then buttoned through both layers. Refer to this handy diagram I made for you:

scarf dimensions

I did a seed stitch which is knit one/purl one on the odd rows and purl one / knit one on the evens rows. That way you end up with an alternating pattern that gives it a nice texture. I used size 11 needles.

I got the fabric for the button at Sew To Speak, but if you have any sort of fabric stash, you’ll definitely have enough for covering a button. I must have had large ambitions of making lots of covered buttons with all the fabric I got for the sole purpose of this project.

If you’ve never covered a button before, don’t worry, its super easy.

covering a button

I would suggest getting the buttons with the little teeth around the edges. The buttons without the teeth require another tool to put it together. Make your life simpler, have less tools! You can get the buttons at any fabric or craft store.

Then you just cover the fabric over the button, hook it under the teeth all the way around and snap on the bottom piece. Sew on the scarf wherever you like.

see? What’d I tell ya, easy peasy!

**Update 2-21-2014** A surge of traffic from All Free Knitting has taken this post out of the archives and brought back to life! Thanks for visiting! Here’s some information that’s been missing: I used less than one skein of Lion Brand Thick and Quick Yarn. And I did not make a button hole. Since it is a chunky stitch, I just pushed the button through the two layers of the scarf. However if your gauge is really tight, it may be hard to push the button through. Happy Knitting and please let me know if you have any other questions!

Columbus is Cool

Columbus is Cool | Igloo Letterpress

February 15, 2012

Columbus has a lot going for it, lots of cool shops and things to do that are unique to the city. Each month I’m going to do/experience something new (to me) that is unique to Columbus and share it with the world here!

handmade valentines

Not only was yesterday Valentine’s Day, but it was also Columbus’s 200th birthday! Woot Woot Cbus! There’s a ton of creative energy happening right now and local businesses are thriving in the limelight.

On Saturday, Brandon and I celebrated Columbus and Valentine’s Day by heading over to Igloo Letterpress in Worthington, OH, which is just north of Columbus, for a Valentine printing party. We got to design our own valentine and then print it on a real letterpress.

The whole process is really fascinating. Our card was pretty simple using just one color and simple text, but imagine doing something with 3 or 4 colors and getting everything to line up perfectly! Well, they know how to do it over at Igloo. Allison, the owner, showed us quite a sampling of the great work they have done and everything was created with such a high caliber of craftsmanship; Brandon and I were very impressed and will definitely be back.

Check out Igloo’s blog for more pictures of the event on Saturday. You’ll also see a pic of yours truly and our fine handiwork!

Here are some of my pictures from the day:

Given my new found fascination with this art, I came across this cool video that gives a “beginners” guide to how a letterpress works, check it out!
