{diy or buy} textile baskets

March 7, 2013

As an avid DIY-er, I often find myself looking at something in a store or at a market and passing on it as I think to myself, “I could totally make that.” Sure, that’s probably true, but do I? 9 times out of 10, no way, Jose! That’s why I’m starting this new series: DIY or BUY, giving you options for making your own or buying new, so you can decide for yourself if you’ll actually make it or just go ahead and buy it. Enjoy!

This first edition of DIY or buy was inspired by Vanja Bazdulj’s fantastic felted pots. While I wouldn’t attempt recreating her wonderful artistic sculptures, there are some great tutorials out there for making a more simplified version of a textile bucket:

//1. I love the minimal quality to Between the Lines’ Folded Leather Basket

//2. Masha from Ornamelle made these beautiful fabric buckets. I love the leather handles! Pippijoe Diary has a great tutorial for making fabric buckets similar to this.

//3. These rope baskets are so great.  The photo above is from Childerhouse, but Esther from Wholly Kao has a great tutorial for making these. Love it but don’t want to make it? Snag one of these beauties handmade by my super-talented friend Char from C-M-Y-S Design

Not crafty? Want some stylin’ storage without bothering to make it? Here’s some options for you:

//1. Simple felt buckets from Filzkraft on Etsy are modern and functional.

//2. Needed a felt basket for your kindling? Archiproducts has just the thing!

//3. Leave it to West Elm to come up with a fantastic felt storage solution. These Woven Felt Baskets come in 5 different sizes for all your storage needs.

//4. I love the clean and airy feel of these linen Eskayel Baskets from Alder & Co.

There you have it. 7 great storage solutions that you can either make or buy.

So what will it be? DIY or buy?

vanja-bazdulj-big wonky pots

I just can’t help myself when it comes to awesome, funky, altered textiles and these Wonky Pots by Architect-turned-Artist Vanja Bazdujl are simply that. It came as no surprise to me when I learned she started out studying architecture because of the inherent structural quality of these pots and the exploration of material behaviors that she is without-a-doubt interested in.  The pots are created from felted wool embedded with resin to manipulate the structure, texture, and graphic nature of each pot. Each piece is a material study celebrating the aesthetics of combining different materials and techniques.

I Love. Keep reading for more: Continue Reading…

weekend recap 03.01-03

weekend recap

Happy Monday everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. My weekend gets three cheers and two thumbs up. Here’s some highlights:

//I’m officially going to Alt NYC! I bought my ticket as soon as they went on sale on Friday afternoon (which is a good thing because they sold out in less than an hour!) and I’m so pumped to learn a lot, meet great people and finally visit NYC! (Plus I’ll get to cross that off the 30 before 30 list!)

//B and My friend from undergrad visited Columbus this weekend and we ate some wonderful meals (Jeni’s and other North Market goodness) and some biodynamic fare here.

//What in the world am I doing with light bulbs? Only time will tell…

//I signed up for a 5k last month so I would have some motivation to actually exercise and get my butt, well I should say, buns in shape. I ran the Run Your Buns Off 5k for the Ohio House Rabbit Rescue. Yes. I ran for the bunnies. Why not?

//Needless to say, I ran it in record time (for me) and I was first female to finish! Soo totally was not expecting that. I mean, it wasn’t a very big race nor was it very competitive, but it definitely motivated me to keep running and sign up for another race in the near future!

So that was my weekend in a nutshell. How was yours? Would love to hear about it!

upcycled chalk paint organizers

diy chalk paint organizers

In past years, I always felt like February just dragged on FOR – EV- ERR (hello Sandlot). Even though it is the shortest month, it is chock full of dreary, cloudy, and cold days. This year, since life seems to be moving faster than the speed of life now, February picked up the pace even with grey skies day after day.

My point? It’s the last day of February! Spring is so close, and in case you didn’t get around to organizing and cleaning at the New Year, spring cleaning season gives you a second chance. Upcycle those glass jars and make some fun reusable organizers.  See the full tutorial over on Petit Elefant this week!
