Bow ties sure are trendy right now. And Lucy is one dog that makes sure to keep up with the trends, especially around Valentine’s Day. Last year she donned a heart sweater that I think may be even more in style this year than it was last year. If you want your dog to be trendy keep on reading for this easy bow tie collar tutorial.

how to make a bow-tie collar:

First things first, cut out your fabric pieces. These sizes are all guidelines. You can cut pieces bigger and have a bigger bow or a wider collar. It’s up to you!

Fold and press the fabric into the thirds so the edges are in the back on all three pieces.

Fold the bow and the “tie” piece in half with the right sides together and sew the edges together. Trim your threads and flip right side out. A re-press may be in order as well.

Accordian-fold the bow piece and slip it through the tie piece. Boom! Bow tie.

If you just wanted to make the bow tie part, you’re done! Fluff up and straighten out and enjoy that bow tie. Keep going if you want to make the rest of the collar and see Lucy’s mad modeling skills in her new favorite accessory.

Press the ends under on the collar piece. I also cut the corners off to keep things looking nice and neat. Sew the velcro on the wrong side on one end and the right side on the other end. It’s helpful to finish one end then wrap the piece around your pup’s neck to make sure you get just the right length before finishing the other end. Make sure to leave room for the velcro to overlap on itself!

Slide the collar piece through the tie piece and make your dog instantly trendy!

Lucy is very aware when she is getting her picture taken. She refused to look at me at first.

Then I bribed her with a treat, hence the “shake.”

Enjoy your  new bow ties for yourself or your pup!

haha I did adopt Lucy, but in Northwest Ohio and in 2007. Maybe they’re cousins? Either way, now you can make him a bow tie! 🙂

Hi! Do you know what type of Lucy is? We adopted a dog in October that looks EXACTLY like her! We’ve been having a heck of a time trying to figure out what he is. We even named him Izzy, as in what “izzy.”

Hi Angela! Lucy is a Cairn Terrier, like Toto from Wizard of Oz! I love your dog’s name, so cute and clever!

Hello! Do you know how big Lucy’s neck is? I know that sounds like a weird question but I have an adorable, fat necked pup named Beezus and I don’t think that size of a collar will fit. She is a Cocker Spaniel and Australian Shepherd mix. Thank you in advance!

It doesn’t appear that you sewed the long ends together. If you turn the strip for the collar inside out (right sides together) and sew the 2 long sides and 1 short sides together and then turn right side out. Then, fold the raw edges to the inside and sew down. It makes for a neater and longer lasting collar. This is such a cute idea, I’m going to give it a go. Thanks.

    Thank You,
    Kelly

P.S. Will take a family picture with Gino wears it.:-)
