diy: personalize your hat

I’m completely in love with this fedora craze that’s been going on lately. I’ve always loved wearing hats and now its even more trendy to fashion your noggin with cute toppers. The problem with trends, however, is that there is a good chance of seeing yourself walk down the street since there’s only so many hats to choose from. I’ve decided to lower my chances of seeing double by giving my plain, Old-Navy-purchased fedora some custom modifications.

I found this fun tie at a thrift store for $1.99 and while I was walking around the store they announced that all blue tags were 75% off that day. I looked down at my tie and saw a blue piece of paper stapled to it. Score! That gave me a fun embellishment for a mere 52 cents!

The chain hat is a super fast way to add some edgy style to your hat. I got the chain at Home Depot. You can buy it by the inch, so save yourself the hassle (and the waste) and just bring your hat in with you and wrap it around so you know just how much you’ll need.

The fabric wrap was also very simple. A 36″ long strip is being very generous. Just scrounge through your scraps and start wrapping it around the hat to see what you can fit around. The minimum length I needed to just wrap around the hat is  27″,  but I figure with the extra for the knot and a seam allowance you’ll need a little more.

The possibilities are really endless with this project: weave ribbon into the chain links, wrap it with loops of braided t-shirt strips, pin a fun brooch on the side…the list goes on and on. What will you do to your hat to make it uniquely yours?

This is such a great idea….! Changing up one hat to go with each outfit would save me a lot of storage space (I have a ton of hats!)
