Chunky Cowl (pattern)

December 13, 2011

Like I said before I’ve been knitting like crazy and for the most part I’ve been on a “cowl kick.” I really like circle scarves and these are the same idea only a little smaller and faster to make! What’s not to like?

This one was made out of Lion Brand Thick and Quick yarn in Lemongrass color and takes a littler over a half a skein.

I used size 13 circular needles, so no seams again!

I modified the moss stitch (which is p1, k1 around then k1, p1) and just doubled it, perhaps we shall call it a double moss stitch? heck, for all I know, that could be what its called.

anywho, here’s what I did:

CO 48

all odd rounds:     k2, p2 around
all even rounds:   p2, k2 around
(so you end up with a checkerboard type pattern)

mine is about 9″ long. Of course you could make it shorter or longer to your preference.

Have a good tuesday!

Is the pattern just k2 p2 and next row p2 k2? Every other row. because I tried this pattern and it looks like stripes. thanks valerie

That is the pattern, try adding or subtracting two stitches to what you cast on so you’ll get a checkerboard pattern instead of the just big ribbing.

If you cast on a multiple of 2, but NOT 4, (42, 46, etc.) then when working in the round you end with a K2, and the next starts with a P2, in effect, just making it K2, P2, continuously.

Ah! That’s much easier! Thanks for the tip!

Thank you for the idea to do a cowl in chunky knit using this pattern
I have done the seed(Moss) stich this way, not sure if I get what your posting, but I do get a checkered board effect instead of a wide ribbing by doing the following
On two needles: cast on 16 stiches or 14
    row one: k2 p2
    row tow k2 p2
    rowthree p2 k2
    row four p2 k2

I have also done one row k1 p1 then purl k1 for the next row continuing these two rows
only . This works nice on a finer yarn also

    Thanks again for sharing.
